|The conceptual design of 50plusX|
1. Concept Evaluation:
When I started with BSSA the concept was defined and the idea sounded promising. However it was just an idea, and we needed "hard facts" to convince investors, that breaking the record is a feasible goal with this approach. So together with a colleague I wrote a VPP (a Velocity Prediction Program), especially designed for this boat. In an iterative process the program calculates all aerodynamic and hydrodynamic forces and moments (5DOF) on a given course. It then sets sail and foil trim appropriately to balance these forces and moments and calculates the boats resistance for this state. By comparison of the resistance with the available driving force from the sail the acceleration is determined. Hence the boat speed for the next time step is calculated and the process is repeated until driving force and resistance are equal and thus the maximum speed is reached.
This analysis showed that the concept is indeed capable of doing well above 55 knots on a reaching course.

One major challenge with 50plusX is controlling cavitation on her hydrofoils. Handling this will be crucial for the success of the project.
After evaluating the state of the art in cavitation research we developed methods and concepts to tackle this challenge.
